Dr. Mary Claire Kinney Bielamowicz, familiarly known as Mickey, earned her B.S. degree in nutrition from University of Texas at Austin and completed a dietetic internship at Indiana University Medical Center. She was awarded an M.S. degree in Food, Nutrition, and Institutional Administration from Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology from Texas A&M University. Prior to joining Extension in 1973, she practiced hospital dietetics at the present Northwestern University Hospital, VA Hospitals located in Big Spring and Oklahoma City, and Cincinnati General Hospital.
For the past three decades, Dr. Bielamowicz has developed research-based technical and clientele-directed publications, websites, and other Extension resources (Special Food Needs—a guide for county agents; Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes; and Cooking Well with Diabetes). She utilizes the latest technology to keep county faculty updated on technical nutrition research/resources, programming ideas, and partnership opportunities with stakeholders (organizations, dietitians, health professionals, drug company representatives, other agency professionals, etc.).
Mickey holds memberships in a number of professional organizations (American/Texas Dietetic Associations, Society for Nutrition Education, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, American Society for Nutritional Sciences, American/Texas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, etc.). She serves on the editorial board of The Diabetes Educator Journal. She has been a resource for the Nutrition Steering Committee and Science Subcommittee of the Texas Cancer Council, Osteoporosis Advisory Committee, Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke Prevention (TDH), and the Texas Diabetes Council Taskforces on request.
She was awarded the 2004 Distinguished Achievement Award for Extension and Continuing Education; 2005 Regents Fellow Texas AgriLife Extension Service recognition; and 2005 Texas AgriLife Extension Service Team Award for Superior Service for her role in the Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes banner program.
