Joan Chandler serves as FCS Regional Program Director for the North Region. She holds a B.S. in Home Economics Education from Texas Tech University and a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at Tyler.

Joan has been an Extension FCS agent since 1976, achieving Level IV rank in 2000. She has been in the North Region for the past 12 years, serving as FCS Program Leader and County Coordinator in Lamb County from 1995–2006, when she moved to serve Lubbock County. Prior to her move to Lamb County, Joan served as an FCS agent in Yoakum, Smith, Haskell, and Van Zandt Counties, as well as being a multi-county FCS agent serving four counties (Camp, Delta, Rains, and Franklin) for seven years. Joan was President-elect for the Texas Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences in 2006, although she resigned the position due to many conflicting dates with her new RPD responsibilities.

Joan has served in a number of leadership positions within the Texas AgriLife Extension Service including: Agent Mentor since 2000; the Texas AgriLife Extension Service Organizational Excellence Committee; Texas Center for Rural Entrepreneurship Committee; State and District BLT Visioning Committees; and the State Extension Diabetes Response Team, which set the framework for the Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes Outcome Program in FCS. Joan’s community leadership roles include: Lubbock Cancer Control Coalition, WesTex Allied Communities–Enterprise Facilitation Project, Lamb County Injury Prevention Committee, and Lamb County Youth Leadership Development Coalition, among others. Joan is known for her programming in Community Resource and Economic Development, Health and Nutrition education including early program development in diabetes education, and 4-H and Youth Development.

Joan is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2005 Texas AgriLife Extension Service Specialists’ Association Distinguished Achievement Award for County Extension Agent work in Community Development, the 2000 and 2004 Texas AgriLife Extension Service Superior Service Awards, and the 2001 Texas A&M University System Agriculture Program Vice Chancellor’s Award in Excellence for Family and Consumer Sciences.
